Tribute to Edhi Foundation
Edhi established his first welfare center and then the Edhi Trust with a mere Rs.
5000 [$100]. The Edhi Foundation grew as people began to recognize its humanitarian
aims. In 1973 when an old apartment building collapsed in Karachi, Edhi’s ambulances
and volunteers were the first to reach the scene and start rescue operations. From
then, on, through the troubles in Karachi and all over the country, Edhi’s ambulances
have been rescuing and taking the injured to hospitals and burying unclaimed bodies.
They go to places where even government agencies hesitate to venture.
The Edhi Foundation is the first of its kind in South Asia that owns air ambulances,
providing quick access to far-flung areas. Whether it is a train accident or a bomb
blast, Edhi ambulances are the first to arrive. The foundation relies on the support
of its 3,500 workers and thousands of volunteers who form the backbone of the organization.
Despite the growth of the foundation, Edhi remains a very down-to-earth person,
dressed always in grey homespun cotton local clothes. He has a hands on approach
to his work, sweeping his own room and even cleaning the gutter if need be. Apart
from the one room, which he uses for his living quarters, the rest of the building
serves as his workplace in Mithadar, a locality of old Karachi that is full of narrow
streets and congested alleyways. Adjoining their living room is a small kitchen
where Bilquees usually prepares the midday meal. Next to it is a washing area where
bodies are bathed and prepared for burial.
KASBIT belief and partake in the human saving and moral development activities. In
recognition of all the above the management of KASBIT decided to appreciate the
efforts and exertions of the Edhi Foundation and organize a tribute in the honor
of Edhi Foundation.
Mr. Imran Khan
In
recognition of the immortalized feats achieved by Mr. Imran Khan, our cricketing
legend who is the first and only captain under whose leadership Pakistan became
the “One Day Cricket Champions of the World”, KASBIT had organized a tribute session to honor him, during which the students learnt about the efforts he had to put for
achieving the various milestones through the tremendous performances of our Pakistani
cricket team. Under his captainship, out of the 48 test matches that were played,
14 were won by Pakistan, 8 lost and the 26 were drawn. Out of the
139 ODIs, Pakistan
won 77, lost 57 and ended one in a tie. In the team's second match
under his leadership, Khan led Pakistan to their first Test win on English soil after
28 years at Lord's. He had the honor of recording his best test bowling figures of by taking
8 wickets for 58 runs against Sri Lanka at Lahore in 1981-82. He also topped
the bowling and batting averages against England in the three test series in 1982 by taking
21 wickets and averaging 56 with the bat. Later in the same year, he put up a highly
acknowledged performance in a home series against the formidable Indian team by
taking 40 wickets in six Tests at an average of 13.95. At the end of this series
in 1982-83, Khan had taken 88 wickets in 13 Test matches over a one year period
as captain. After his retirement from cricket, he
founded the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, a charity organization
named in memory of his late mother. As the Trust's maiden endower,
Imran Khan established
Pakistan's first and only cancer hospital, the construction
of which was at costs
exceeding $25 million, that were raised through donations and funds raised by his tireless personal efforts nationally and from all over the world. His charitable cancer hospital now treats thousands of people to give back
lives that would otherwise have been lost.
In 1992,
Khan was awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz in addition to the President’s
Pride of Performance Award that was bestowed to him in 1983. Imran Khan is featured in the University of Oxford's
Hall of Fame and has been an honorary fellow of Oxford's Keble College. On 7 December
2005, Khan was appointed as the fifth Chancellor of the University of Bradford, where
he is also a patron of the “Born in Bradford”
research project. In recognition of all the honors that he has achieved, Imran Khan
has proven himself to be a role model for the youth of not only Pakistan, but internationally
and in recognition of his efforts, KASBIT awarded him with a Gold Medal and Life
Time Achievement Award Shield.
Mr. Mohsin Khan
He
was one of a minority of South Asian players to come to terms with conditions in
Australia and England, scoring two consecutive centuries in Australia in 1983/4
and becoming the first Pakistani batsman to score a Test double century at Lord's,
which he did earlier in 1982.He retired from international cricket to pursue a film
career. On 2 March, 2010 Pakistan have named Mohsin Khan as Iqbal Qasim's successor
as chief selector of the national cricket team. He accepted the role turned down
by fellow one-time opener Saeed Anwar. Mohsin is Pakistan's fourth chief of selectors
in the past 12 months of 2009-10.
To recognize his efforts and other achievements in his life KASB Institute of Technology
presented a tribute in his honor and presented him life time achievement award.
Mr. Zaheer Abbas
If
George Headley was the Black Bradman, Zaheer Abbas was christened as the Asian Bradman
by fans for his voracious appetite for runs. In only his second Test, Zaheer Abbas
scored his highest Test score of 274 and followed it up with consistent scores
after that. He was to score three more double centuries underlying his
appetite for making runs, once he got going and got set at the crease.
Zaheer Abbas also played 62 ODIs in which he scored at an average of almost 48 at
a strike
rate of 85. In the days when there were no fielding restrictions and fielding captains
could place all their fielders on the boundaries, however all these made
no difference to him. Zaheer Abbas batted liked an artist
when he got going, his high back lift combined with his ability to play off the
front or the back foot with equal ease, made him look as graceful as an artist at his very best.
But this
was not that he achieved, he also holds the record for being the first Asian
to score more than 100 first class centuries, a record was not broken
for years. This, he achieved by playing for Gloucestershire for more than a decade,
scoring almost 35k runs.
He was famously also called the ‘Run Machine’, however, the only blemish he had
was against the genuine quick bowling of the West Indies in the 1985s, in which
he averaged 18.50. Zaheer Abbas thereafter retired from the game in part also to
the indifferent attitude exhibited by the selectors towards him.
In recognition of the achievements of Zaheer Abbas in the cricketing world, KASBIT
paid a tribute to this living legend
and presented him with a Gold Medal and Life
Time Achievement Award.
